Purpose of the HIPAAlive list:

Provide an opportunity for healthcare managers and professionals to discuss health information, EDI standardization, security, and privacy issues and events related to HIPAA.

Prior to joining the list server, please read all of the following policies carefully. Failure to adhear to policies will result in removal from the list and subsequent ban. Messages on the HIPAALive list server are not legal advise and should not be used as such. Questions requiring legal explanation should be addressed to a retained attorney. Phoenix Health Systems cannot be held responsible for information transmitted by list members. Opinions of list members do not necessarily reflect those of Phoenix Health Systems and its employees.

** POSTING TO HIPAAlive **

To ask a question or post a comment, simply send an email in PLAIN TEXT format (here's a detailed explanation as to why, including how to turn off
HTML or MIME in your particular mail client
, as messages sent in HTML format will be rejected by the listserver) to:

hipaalive@lists.hipaalert.com

If you ask a question of the list and receive answers sent directly to you, please post a summary of the answers you receive. This is a popular and very useful feature of many other successful email discussion groups like HIPAAlive. Simply gather the discussion responses that you receive off-list and post the main points by doing a quick cut-&-paste of your original question followed by the answers you received. Then send it to the list by adding SUMMARY: to your original subject line (which should, of course, follow the format explained below under "Subject Headers").

** PROBLEMS **

If you experience any problems, PLEASE do not post them to the list – as every one of the nearly 5,000 members will receive them! Send them only to and we will respond as soon as possible.

Thank you for your participation in HIPAAlive!

** SUBJECT HEADERS **

Each post to the list should contain an ALL-CAPS header in the subject line, followed by several words describing the gist of your message. Following this format for subject lines makes it easier for members to scan posts, sort, filter, read or delete as suits them.

Please do not use a SUBJECT HEADER other than those listed below:

ADMIN
Used by the list administrators only, to point out issues related to the
mailing list itself.
Example: ADMIN: Instructions on how to suspend list

PRIVACY
For discussing issues related to the Privacy Rule
Example: PRIVACY: Sending patient reminders

SECURITY
For discussing issues related to the Security Rule
Example: SECURITY: Single sign-ons

TCS
For discussing issues related to the Transactions and Code Sets Rule
Example: TCS: Valid Code set

GENERAL
For discussing any issue that arcs over all the individual rules or any
issue for which there isn't a separate header for yet.
Example: GENERAL: Business Associate/Partner

** GUIDELINES FOR DISCUSSION **

The subject matter of messages should relate to healthcare information security and confidentiality, including the impact of national legislation such as HIPAA and other related federal and state initiatives. Basically, ANYTHING related to the security and privacy of medical or other health information within the healthcare environment is fair game.

If you have thought of a question, someone else probably has too. BRING IT UP! – there are no stupid or wrong questions or comments on this list.

** LIST POLICY IN BRIEF **

  • Website URLs may not be included within messages to HIPAAlive when it is reasonable to believe that the URL is being posted in order to sell a product or service, including membership.
  • No advertisements, promotions, or informal "pitches" on-list for particular
products or services unrelated to HIPAAlive – even if submitted by "non-interested" parties.
  • Organizations may answer specific questions off-list (via email). However, culling email addresses from the list and sending indiscriminate mass marketing emails is prohibited and offenders will be removed from the list.
  • Please do not survey list participants, nor post announcements or press releases to the list. Phoenix Health Systems, the list owner, conducts quarterly surveys of the HIPAA community and makes the results available on this web site, HIPAAdvisory.com. Phoenix also sends a bimonthly conference announcement to the list. To have an upcoming HIPAA-related conference added to this posting and to our Conference Calendar, simply send them to us at .
  • Practice good "netiquette":
    • As a courtesy to other list members, please edit your responses to remove unnecessary or multiple >>>'s (prior messages, replies, and footers). Also, keep your signature blocks down to name, title, company, email address, etc. -- ideally no more than five lines.
    • Send your messages to the list in PLAIN TEXT format only. Here's a detailed explanation as to why, including how to turn off HTML or MIME in your particular mail client. Messages sent in HTML format will be rejected by the listserver.
    • Please do not send attachments to the list due to the risk of transmitting a virus and not everyone has the ability to read attachments, including digest members. Instead, provide the data as text in your post, offer to provide the data to those who request it, or put it up on the web.
    • When posting, do not use "return receipt." Not only will you receive lots of receipts, but you are asking 5,000 list members to click yes or no regarding them.
    • Please send your short responses – "I agree...," "Thank you...," "Send me a copy...," etc. – to the author alone. Don't reply to the list of nearly 5,000 members unless you think your mail would be truly helpful and of interest to the majority.

Because a discussion list can be very dynamic and unforeseen issues may arise, Phoenix Health Systems, Inc., reserves the right to modify this policy at any time to increase its value to HIPAAlive members.
